Chart Wrap: Can Guetta topple Pharrell?

HOT 100 Pharrell remains at the top for yet another week, but David Guetta’s Shot Me Down is flying up the chart, moving from #23 to #6 in only its second week at radio. Guetta is a proven success story at commercial radio, and with Pharrell-fever surely set to start winding down after his Future Music appearances, maybe this will be the track to topple Pharrell. Elsewhere in the Top 10, there are slight shuffles between #2, #3 and #4, Rihanna has jumped back up to #6 after momentarily dropping to #9 last week, and Aloe Blacc’s The Man, Neon Jungle’s Braveheart and Avicii’s Addicted To You all slid up the chart, sitting at #7, #9 and #10, respectively. Big movers this week were Coldplay’s Magic, which leapt from #95 to #20, Pitbull’s Wild Wild Love (up from #40 to #21), and High by Peking Duk (#41 to #29). ARIA SINGLES Last week he tied with the Macarena, and this week Pharrell sits atop for the tenth straight week, putting Happy on equal par with track such as Abba’s Mama Mia, Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool, and I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston (written by Dolly Parton, easily one of the most underrated songwriters of our time). Taylor Henderson’s When You Were Minedebuted strongly this week, at #5, already proving a strong follow-up to his #1 debut single Borrow My Heart, which topped the chart last November. Coldplay’s Magic jumped up the chart, as it did on the Hot 100, moving from #17 to #6, giving the politest lads in music their sixth ARIA top ten. Another strong Aussie debut came from Iggy Azalea, whose fierce Fancy entered at #19.It’s pleasing to see Azalea start to make inroads here; previously her highest charting single was Change Your Life, which reach #44 in October. Finally, our Jess entered the chart at #21 with Never Be The Same, her fourth single to chart from the Beautiful record. ARIA ALBUMS INXS blocked his chances of a #1 debut last week, but Pharrell’s annoyingly-spacedG I R Lhas hit the top spot, which means he reigns supreme over all three charts. Unless he releases a cover of Ryan Adam’s Two, and tops the Country Chart, this is as good as it will get for Pharrell. Lea Michele’s Louder entered at #4, mirroring its placing on the Billboard 200. A little lower on the chart, Elbow’s awkwardly-titledThe Take Off And Landing Of Everything(although their last record was called Build A Rocket Boys! so it’s an improvement) debuted at #12, and Buried In Verona’s Faceless proves yet again that Australian hardcore/metalcore is going through a purple patch, debuting at #15, and beating their previous highest placing of #20 for the 2012 record Notorious. Lior’s fourth studio set Scattered Reflections also debuted strongly, sitting at #23. All in all, a very pleasing week in regards to Australian artists.
