Chart Wrap: October 21, 2013

Hot 100 Well, it’s been a while since we’ve had a shake up like this, but it’s finally happened. If you were to compare our top 10 this week to last week you wouldn’t recognise it. We’ve got 4 new entries coming from way down in the charts: the new ones from Zedd, Avicii, Nathaniel and Calvin Harris. Though, for the most part, they’re no strangers to our top 10, it’s pretty remarkable the distance they have travelled this week. #1 and #2 remain sturdy for another week, held by Katy Perry’s Roar and Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball. Aussie fave Jessica Mauboy, however, is up 5 spots from #8 to #3 with Pop A Bottle.After her album, Beautiful dropped last week, she’s been on Today and other like-minded TV shows pushing the single. We’d love to see this one keep climbing as it’s only its fourthweek in! Drake’s up to #4 after another week of increased airplay. His current single Hold On, We’re Going Home is making waves overseas as it sits at #5 in the Billboard Hot 100 and tops the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart (the second time Drake’s hit pole position this year, after Started From The Bottom) as album Nothing Was The Same still sits at #3 in the Billboard 200. Zedd has come from outside of the top 20 to sit at #5 with Stay The Night this week. Zeed are also rising quickly in the Shazam Top Tags chart, where they sit at #8, and the ARIA Singles chart (#11). Next down the list is the third single from Avicii’s smashing album True: Hey Brother. Jumping 25 spots to come from #31 to #6 in its secondchart week,Hey Brother is the most tagged song in Australia at the moment according to figures last week from Shazam, while the rest of the world is still sitting on Wake Me Up– currently #6 UK Airplay and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It appears we’re slightly ahead of the curve as the track is on a downer, dropping to #12 from #3. The debut single fromX-Factoralumni Nathaniel is close behind Avicii at #7, after dropping in last week at #19. He’s also got the secondmost tagged track on Shazam. Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ Summertime Sadness is down to #8, and One Republic’s Something I Need remains steadfast at #9. Finally in at #10, from #65, comes Calvin Harris with Under Control. Another monster track from Calvin Harris that is sure to tear through the top 10 in the coming weeks. Outside of the top 10 we see James Blunt’s Bonfire Heart at #11 from #24, also sitting at #9 on Shazam’s Top Tags. This comes after his recent appearance on X-Factor and album drop. Jason Derulo’s Marry me is up 5 spots to #17 in its third week. Derulo’s previous single with 2Chainz is still in heavy rotation overseas – its #2 in the UK Airplay chart according to Music Week – but is down from #4 last week to #21 in our chart, which again puts us ahead of the curve. Justice Crew are up to #23 after debuting last week at #48 with Everybody. The single looked promising after a huge few weeks of adds, but obviously airplay hasn’t yet translated to big sales for the young Aussies. Still a jump of 25 spots is no small feat; we’ll be keeping a close eye on them in weeks to come. Just behind them at #25, Pitbull and Ke$ha make their debut with Timber.The single has also landed at #6 in the ARIA singles chart this week which is rather strange, as their recently announced double headline tour was cancelled because of poor sales. The single is currently #14 on Shazam’s Top Tags, which means people are at least enquiring about it after hearing it, perhaps it was a case of the tour being scheduled before the single had made its mark. That aside, Katy Perry’s Dark Horse is making big moves up the chart – from #64 last week to #31 – and we’ve got the non-metro, and independent stations to thank for it. Those who have moved on from the current #1 Roar are paving the way for Dark Horse. I suspect we’ll continue to see this track leap up the chart in coming weeks as the major commercials move on after the albumPRISM drops this week. Other notable debuts this week in our Hot 100 include John Newman’s followup single to Love Me Again (which peaked at #16), Cheating,in at #46 as his first full length album Tribute dropped last week. Cheating is currently at #4 in the MusicWeek UK Airplay chart and we expect to see similar achievements here in the coming weeks. Bastille’s Things We Lost In The Fire is in just behind it at #48, while Classified’s new track Inner Ninja ft. Olly Murs is in at #58. ARIA SINGLES Roar continues its dominance in the ARIA Singles chart this week as her total reign extends to eight weeks. Perry is now equal to Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines as the longest running #1 of the year, and one more week will see her hold the crown. Avicii’s Hey Brother has leapt up 12 spots to #2, evidence of the fact that increased airplay, as we’ve seen in our own Hot 100, translates to sales. It’s the Swede’s third top 5 hitin the ARIA Singles Chart from albumTrue. Nathaniel’s You is up 5 spots from its debut position last week to #4. Pitbull & Ke$ha have come in at #6 with Timber. It’s Pitbulls second top 10 track of the year after Feel This Moment. After two top 10 singles last year Justice Crew are back into the Aria Singles at #15 with Everybody. Under Control by Calvin Harris is in at #17 just in front of Eminem’s new single Survival at #18. Survival makes a total of 3 tracks from his new album The Marchall Mathers LP 2 in the ARIA Singles Chart, the others being Berzerk at #31 and Rap God at #40. ARIA ALBUMS Pearl Jam’s Lightning Bolt has come out on top this week debuting at #1. It’s the American grunge veterans eighth #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and comes nearly 20 years to the week after the band’s first appearance at #1, withVS, in October of ’93. Lorde’s Pure Heroine remains at #2 in its thirdweek, and last week’s #1: Miley Cyrus’s, Bangerz, has dropped down to #3. Avicii’s True is up from #19 last week to #5, no doubt off the back of radio’s love affair withHey Brother. Our very own international DJ/pop superstar Havana Brown has debuted at #6 with her album Flashing Lights, which includes current hit Warrior as well as We Run The Night and Big Banana. John Newman’s debut effort Tribute is in at #7 and Florida’s Trivium have come in at #8 with their sixth album Vengeance Falls. Victorian sisters Stonefield have released their self-titled debut album this week which got the best of a Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney. Stonefield came in at #21 first week and Paul McCartney’s sixteenth studio album, New(assuming you ignore all those Beatles and Wings records) entered one place below at #22.
