Curio Corner #1: Ween’s rejected Pizza Hut jingle

Putting cheese inside the crust of a pizza was one of those amazing ideas that advanced mankind when it was first rolled out by Pizza Hut in 2002 as the main feature of their ’Insider’ range of pizzas. To publicise this feat of engineering, Pizza Hut needed a similarly edgy theme song, so naturally they approached alt-joke band Ween and asked them to compose a jingle for their advertising campaign.

Before you roll your eyes at the stupidity of these corporate fat-cats, keep in mind that Ween were adept at creating faithful pastiches of every imaginable genre, and they were hardly the type of high-art heroes who would refuse such an offer. Although, having said that, they did also once record twelve country tracks with the cream of Nashville’s session-players before taking the recordings to a separate studio and laying offensive joke lyrics over the entire thing. Regardless, Ween were up for the mission, offering up a ditty calledWhere’d The Cheese Go – which was quickly rejected.

Not to be dissuaded, the duo re-submitted the track with a few tweaks, such as changing the lyric to: “Bitch, where’d the motherfucking cheese go at?”

Not surprisingly, Dean and Gene Ween soon found they were no longer involved in the project, but their hard work lives on in our hearts – and also on the Internet. Enjoy both jingles below.
