Gig Of The Week: Eskimo Joe

May 20
Fowlers Live, Adelaide

Eskimo Joe seem to be indulging in a dose of nostaglia of late; their tour and accompanying single is named When We Were Kids, and whispers indicate that their latest material is reminiscent of the Eskimo Joe of old. While we don’t expect for a minute that this suggests a trip back in time to their crazy, sugar-pop days of Sweater, and Turn Up Your Stereo (although that would be a left-turn none of us could have predicted), it may indicate a move away from the stadium sound the band adopted for Black Fingernails Red Wine and Eastern-fied for Ishalla.

These shows certainly won’t be big stadium affairs, the band are performing in acoustic mode, showcasing tracks from their forthcoming album (no release date or name confirmed just yet), as well as pulling out some classics. It will provide both a sneak peek of their new material and show the quality of their catalogue. stripping songs down to this level is the best proof of a good song, and Eskimo Joe certainly know how to craft those.
