Ask APRA: How do I connect with other artists to get my songs performed?

25 January 2010

by Allison Gumbleton, APRA/AMCOS Communications

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. The best thing you can possibly do to get your songs out there is to network.

Real time

There are many organisations, including APRA, which can help you meet and establish relationships with your songwriting peers. APRA hosts member numerous events throughout the year:

- Songwriter Speaks - an initiative which enables APRA members to gain an insight into some of Australia's most successful songwriters ;

- Connect@APRA – these meetings give you a chance to meet your local APRA Writer Services Representative in an informal atmosphere, as well as other songwriters;

- APRA Roadshow – currently on tour, the 2009 APRA Roadshow is taking the Live Music Revolution across Australia. We have gathered together a panel of experts – national touring artists, their manager, representatives from major live venues, and booking agent – to discuss challenges and opportunities of live music in Australia.

There are also numerous song writing societies in Australia that host events for networking opportunities. A comprehensive list of music industry contacts is kept on our website.

Publishers

Publishers are there to help you get the most out of your work. It’s worth getting in touch with a publisher who has a special interest in the type of music you write.

Online

Another great way to connect with your song writing peers is online – think MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. These sites allow you to collaborate beyond geographical confines, connecting with peers anywhere on the globe.
 Once you have found a performer, the next most important step is to register your work with APRA. We are here for you, to collect the royalties to which you are entitled.
