TMN talks to Christopher Morecroft, the Music Director for MAX FM Taree, about breaking tracks, his incredible list of previous jobs and the joys of interviewing Amy Meredith.
What are you loving about your station this week?
This week I’m promoting The Beautiful Girls concert at the Pacific Palms and I have just confirmed a promotion for Grinspoon when they go to Newcastle. I even scored some tickets to the shows...for professional reasons of course. It’s been really exciting and fulfilling tracking down managers and promoters. I am really lucky at Max FM, the whole team is great fun and really supportive. They encourage me to explore new ideas and find new ways to interact with our listeners. I’m new to the game so it’s really important to work in a positive environment.
Who’s been the best guest you’ve had on the station and why?
I interviewed Christian, the front man for Amy Meredith, a few weeks ago. He took great pleasure in claiming to have popped my cherry, as he was the first person I had ever interviewed, other than Mike Rann, but that was on community radio and it was less of an interview and more me letting him talk about all the great things he was doing. It was great to talk to a musician who was excited rather than dry and trying to act cool.
Which track have you personally championed and helped break it?
I added Mark Ronson’s Bang Bang Bang as soon as I started at the station. I was convinced it was going to be a hit and this week it hit the top 30!
Why do you work in radio?
When I was 11 I found my parents record collection and got hooked on The Goons, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Monty Python and Good Morning Vietnam. I loved that style of lunacy and subtlety. I guess I just want to bring the simplicity back into radio. Music and laughter.
If you weren’t in radio, what would you be doing?
I’ve been in sales, a bike mechanic, check out chick, labourer, photographer, brick layer, diesel mechanic, bike courier, studio assistant, lift operator and a sandwich artist. So I have no idea what I would be doing. Radio is the only place I have ever felt at home so every other job has been life experience. Without radio I would spend my life...getting more life experience.
