Record company EMI issued a stern warning to press late yesterday after it was revealed a review copy of The Cat Empire’s forthcoming album Cinema was sold this week on eBay for $200. The album isn’t out until June 25.
An EMI representative told TMN: “We’re certainly not happy because it was such a breach of trust by the media person that sold it. Management and the band were disappointed as well.”
The album was purchased by a Cat Empire fan who then posted some tracks to his blog. On the label's insistence, he has since taken it down. As for the eBay seller, the rep says “We don't know who it was as the seller obviously wasn't using their real name but we are planning to investigate further."
In an email sent yesterday afternoon, the record label wrote: "While we are excited that there are fans that are willing to pay $200 to hear the new album, it is a condition of receiving advance music from EMI that this trust is not breached and this music is not shared, sold or commercially exploited in any fashion.”
They also stated that “We realise that 99.9% of the media that we service respect this relationship, but in light of this, and other recent breaches, the situation has to be addressed,” although there was no word on how they would do it. More details as they come.
In the meantime, The Cat Empire will launch Cinema at the Toff in Town in Melbourne on June 20, which will be webcast to the worldwide web.
