Julia Stone completes “little evil” solo record

She recorded most of the songs last year, but Julia Stone, one half of chart-topping Aussie duo Angus and Julia Stone, has finally revealed details of her long-awaited solo album.

In an interview earlier this week, Julia told TMN the record was only days away from completion and fans could expect to hear it as early as next month.

“It’s getting mixed this week and printed up next week. I’m just going to sell it at shows when we tour around Australia [from mid-August],” she explains.

The 25-year-old singer wrote and recorded the ten songs late last year while living in New York. Hold On, the opening track from Angus and Julia’s latest album Down the Way (which went #1 on the ARIA Albums chart in March), was originally slated for inclusion too.

Another solo track This Love recently featured on the soundtrack for the film The Waiting City, starring Joel Edgerton and Rhada Mitchell.

Despite the imminent print deadline, she’s still undecided about what she’ll call the album, although working titles include Winter on the Weekend and The Memory Machine, both of which are songs on the album.

“I think it’ll be the artwork that decides it – it looks like vintage horror movie posters,” she said.

And while she describes the album’s sound as “mellow”, she does reveal that many of the new songs reflect a darker subject matter and tone.

“There’s one song where I sing about horror movies, but most of the tracks are edging on something. I think I was in a really dark space when I wrote it so it's a little evil record. It’s not angry, just spooky.”

An official release date through EMI is yet to be confirmed, but keep an eye on that merch counter at their upcoming shows.

Currently there's no plans - or time - for a solo tour with Angus and Julia booked to play shows in the UK and Europe until December.
