Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP not cool with independent awards snub

08 September 2010

It’s been one of the biggest overseas hits for an Aussie act in years, but that feat hasn’t earned Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP’s We No Speak Americano a single nomination at this year’s Jagermeister Independent Music Awards. Not a one.

It’s an oversight that’s bewildered Jamie Raeburn, Director of their label Sweat It Out, who’s still searching for answers. Especially, as he points out the song is almost Double Platinum here and has gone #1 in 17 countries (including UK, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Brasil, Romania and Russia).

In a personal statement to TMN, he expressed both surprise and anger at the omission, writing:

“When I found out the song had not been nominated for the Independent Awards, I assumed it was a mistake. Apparently not... I’ve no idea how the awards are structured & I know these things are impossible to please everyone. If however it had anything to do with the chart, we sat on top of that for at least 3 months and it’s still top five 6 months post-release.

If that’s not a cause for nomination then I’m buggered to know what is. If it’s an award for who’s got the most industry mates then can it be renamed? Bloody hard explaining to young producers why they aren’t even in the competition.”

Currently the nominees for Best Independent Dance / Electronica Album include Faux Pas, Jamie Lloyd, Midnight Juggernauts, Nick Thayer, Opiuo and Space Invadas.
