Ben Harper announces first solo album in five years

25 February 2011

by Poppy Reid

Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Ben Harper will release his tenth studio album titled Give Till It’s Gone through Virgin Records on May 17.

The 11-track release is his first solo offering since 2006's Both Sides Of The Gun. Recorded at rock luminary Jackson Browne’s L.A. studio, Harper collaborates with Browne on one track, titled Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn.

This may not even be the most anticipated co-write as Ringo Starr appears on two of the album tracks; Starr sings and plays drums on both the improvised instrumental track, Get There From Here and a psychedelic tinged number called Spilling Faith.

Harper says the album examines the disparity between the man he is now and the man he endeavours to become.

“I’ve never made a record that was such a timeline,” Harper says. “It’s a real extension of the last year and half in my life, and all these sounds are inspired by my experiences. It’s as honest a musical statement as I could make.”

The first single to be released from Give Till It’s Gone is the Neil Young inspired track Rock N’ Roll Is Free. Harper wrote the song immediately after watching Young perform Rockin’ In The Free World in London last year.

Harper is headed to Australia in April this year for the annual Bluesfest at Byron Bay where he will play alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, B.B King and Elvis Costello.
