27 January 2012
Gotye's #1 break-up single with Kimbra was announced as Triple J's top track last night for the Hottest 100 of 2011, much to the surprise of no one.
Music Director Nick Findlay said: “It was pretty obvious from the first time we started playing Somebody That I Used To Know, back in July, that we had something truly special in our hands. It was how quickly it rose to being one of the biggest songs on the planet, that really took us all by surprise. It is a satisfying acknowledgement of just how much of a musical mastermind Wally DeBacker is.”
More surprising was the #2 placing of The Black Keys' track Lonely Boy but with 158,258 voters from 144 countries and 1,378,869 votes selecting an Australian-dominant top 10, this year was the station's biggest, most accurate poll yet.
Matt Corby has well as truly ditched his Australian Idol association with the Sydney artist's track Brother placing at #3 and ARIA winners Boy & Bear placed at #4 with their single Feeding Line, the indie-folk band received two other nods for their tracks Milk & Sticks and Part Time Believer which came in at numbers 49 and 50 respectively.
Triple J Manager Chris Scaddan said this year's Hottest 100 countdown did well to stop the nation's young listeners again with 3924 listening parties held both nationally and internationally.
“triple J’s Hottest 100 really does stop the nation every year on Australia Day as millions of young music lovers all over the world listen to the countdown," said Scadden "It shows that triple j is at the centre of conversations about new music in Australia, whether that’s on the radio, online, mobile, Facebook, Twitter or other social media. This year was another triumph of great music and big parties right across the country. We have a ball doing the Hottest 100 every year and hope that you do too.”
34 Australian artists received placings and 20 acts placed more than once. The Wombats took out four spots (18, 24, 26 and 94) on the chart and Boy & Bear, 360, Bon Iver, Grouplove, Gotye, Kimbra and Foster The People all placed three times.
Interestingly, Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks placed at #32 in the 2010 poll while Owl Eyes' cover of the track placed at #28 for 2011.
