Hacktivism group Anonymous target 2DayFM

Hacktivism group Anonymous seem to have become the latest group to add their voice to the growing condemnation of 2DayFM radio duo Mel Greig and Michael Christian after a video surfaced on YouTube over the weekend.

The video features an individual delivering a message to 2Day FM from behind the organisations trademark Guy Fawkes mask, in a text-to-speech generated voice.

The anonymous figure then reminds 2DayFM the world is watching them.

“You are directly responsible for the death of another human being, a woman who was dedicated to helping others, a mother who was loved, a respected member of the community who was turned into a joke by your radio station.”

They then go on to inform 2DayFM that they are placing advertisers databases, websites and online advertising at risk and demand that the station terminate the contracts of Mel Greig and Michael Christian within one week.

Although the video does include the organisations motto – “We are Anonymous. We are a legion. We are amongst you. Expect us” – it has not yet been confirmed if Anonymous published the video.

Early signs indicate the video may not be from the most credible of sources as Anonymous is spelt incorrectly in the opening credits and the video was uploaded to a new YouTube account, An-onym Oz, unusual given the organisations global reach.

The video comes off the back of a prank phone call made to nurse Jacintha Saldanha where the Hot 30 Countdown hosts impersonated Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, and persuaded Saldanha to transfer their call to a nurse who revealed details of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s health as she recovered from severe morning sickness in King Edward VII Hospital.

The 46-year-old mother-of-two was found dead in her home on Friday morning, just 48-hours after the prank was broadcast.

The prank has sparked furore in the 2DayFM Facebook page and prompted an investigation from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Chairman of King Edward VII Hospital Lord Glenarthur slammed the actions of the radio duo for their “humiliation of two dedicated and caring nurses”, calling the prank “truly appalling” and “foolish”.
