APRA reveals Song of the Year contenders, award details

24 March 2011

by Jason Treuen

Old guards, new talent and a novelty remix of the ABC news theme will vie for this year’s coveted APRA Song of the Year Award with nominations announced today.

Guy Sebastian, Thirsty Merc and Birds of Tokyo scored two nominations apiece (see the full list below). Fresh faces Tame Impala, Little Red and Gyroscope also got a look in alongside veteran nominees like John Butler Trio, Hoodoo Gurus, Goyte, Sia and Kasey Chambers.

Last year’s winners The Temper Trap (who won for Sweet Disposition) got another nod for follow-up single Love Lost while ARIA Award winners Angus & Julia Stone are also in the running with the Triple J Hottest 100 poll-topping Big Jet Plane.

late Rowland S Howard, who died in December 2009 of liver cancer, also received a nomination for his song, Golden Age of Bloodshed.

And in perhaps the strangest inclusion, dance metal act Pendulum scored a tip not for an original track, but their novelty remix of the ABC TV news theme.

The Top 20 contenders are determined by the votes of APRA members with the five finalists announced in May. The winner announced at the Awards on Tuesday June 21 at Sydney’s Carriageworks complex.

This year’s ceremony will also feature the categories for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Played Australian Work, Most Played Australian Work Overseas, International Work of the Year, Country Work of the Year, Blues & Roots Work of the Year, Urban Work of the Year, Dance Work of the Year and Rock Work of the Year.

The winners for these are calculated from APRA’s statistical analysis, which includes airplay across radio and television and for the first time, digital and online performance statistics.

Despite the controversy last year, where The Herd's Urthboy publicly complained about hip hop being thrown into the Urban category with Jessica Mauboy, there will be no changes.

The Songwriter of the Year and the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music will be voted for by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors .

APRA / AMCOS CEO Brett Cottle said: “It is immensely encouraging to see the depth and diversity of APRA's membership reflected in the shortlist for the 2011 APRA Song of the Year. I am heartened to see veteran songwriters shortlisted alongside emerging talent, strong proof that songwriting can be a lifelong vocation.”
