Chart wrap-up: Katy Perry #1 Airplay, 21 Greater Than 4

04 July 2011

by Thomas Gilmore

Turns out that 21 is greater than 4. Another week for Adele's 21 at #1 has upset Beyonce's hopes of her first #1 album in Australia. Meanwhile, Katy Perry's Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) has hit #1, securing her fourth #1 Airplay single from her #1 album, Teenage Dream.

TMN HOT 100 AIRPLAY CHART

It’s been a turbulent week for Australian radio, with playlist changes in the post-ratings period. Katy Perry has taken the throne with her latest, Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F), making it four from five singles from Teenage Dream to hit #1. What a warm welcome for EMI to their new digs this week!

Bruno MarsMarry You continues to climb, hitting #10 from #8 and Pete Murray’s Always A Winner, jumping from #39 to #15 (fastest mover for the second week in a row) are the biggest threats to the top of the chart. It was the bottom half of the chart that saw the most action this week, however.

There were eight new additions to the chart this week, with Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass doing the best of the bunch, entering at #61. LMFAO’s new track, Champagne Showers entered at #67 (while Party Rock Anthem sticks at #4, sure to fall while the champagne flows).

This week’s Most Added track to radio, Eskimo Joe’s Love Is A Drug started a week earlier than usual, entering at #72; set for a rapid climb in the coming weeks with more additions and spins coming its way. Bad Meets Evil, David Guetta, These Kids Wear Crowns, Calvin Harris and Aloe Blacc round out the rest of the additions to the 100.

ARIA TOP 50 SINGLES CHART

Adele is still the reigning queen of the ARIA Charts. She continues to sit on top with Someone Like You. One position below, LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem also remains static. In case you thought they only had one single each in the ARIA Singles Top 50, Adele's older single, Rolling In The Deep is still holding up in the Top 5, slipping from #4 to #5 while LMFAO's newest single, Champagne Showers is charging up the chart. Last week Champagne Showers was at #26, this week; #14 with a mark as a Bullet Performer.

Christina Perri's Jar Of Hearts has followed the same Bullet Performer blueprint. This week, Jar Of Hearts has cracked the Top 5, jumping from #6 to #3 in her fifth week inside the fifty. Nicki Minaj is also finding her feet on the chart. The same week as her TMN Hot 100 debut for Super Bass, she has seen a jump in sales, seeing her fly from #30 to #19.

There were a few fresh entries into the 50 this week. Britney Spears' I Wanna Go chalked up a #33 debut, while Example's Changed The Way You Kissed Me (a fast mover on the TMN Hot 100 this week) entered at #35. Finally, David Guetta's Little Bad Girl, featuring Taio Cruz and Ludacris popped in at #40.

ARIA TOP 50 ALBUMS CHART

Australia's chart-toping favourite, Adele has upset Beyonce's long-standing #1 debut hopes with her ever-dominant #1 album, 21. Interestingly, Beyonce has never topped the albums chart in Australia with her solo material, or even with Destiny's Child. Let's hope she can shake her history and climb up to #1 with 4 in the next week or two. Adele keeps making it look so easy, with 19 still holding on at #9.

LMFAO scored a #3 debut with their hit-laden album, Sorry For Party Rocking. Between Beyonce and LMFAO's push, Bon Iver's self titled record fell from #2 to #4 in week two. Meanwhile, Bad Meets Evil's Hell: The Sequel fell the same distance to #5 after a #3 debut.

Gillian Welch's The Harrow & The Harvest entered at #11 this week, just outside the Top 10. Weird Al Yankovic debuted at #28 with Apocalypse. Taking Back Sunday's latest self-titled effort, and In Flames Sounds Of A Playground rounded out the week's debuts at #49 and #50.
