22 July 2011
Katy Perry, Kanye West and Adele lead the nominations of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, with the dark, simple clip for Yonkers (watch below) scoring Tyler the Creator a surprise nod for Video of the Year.
Perry leads the field with nine nominations, but the gong for most-honoured video goes to Adele’s Rolling In The Deep, with all seven of her nods - Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Editing - being for the clip. Yeezy collects four for the Hype Williams-directed, non-epileptic-friendly clip for All of the Lights; he also contributed a verse to Perry’s E.T., which was nominated for five awards.
Other multiple nominees include Bruno Mars (four), Beyonce, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Thirty Seconds to Mars (three each), and two apiece for the Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, Pitbull, Lil Wayne, Tyler, Foster the People and Manchester Orchestra. A couple of indie favourites also made the cut, with Mumford & Sons, The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Chromeo, and Death Cab for Cutie’s “recorded live” clip for You Are A Tourist (watch below) all nabbing one nod each.
For the full list, see below. The award show will take place on Monday August 29th, 11am AEST.
