by Jess Holton

Triple J Unearthed success story, Boy & Bear have received seven ARIA Award nominations for their album, Moonfire. The quintet is nominated for Best Adult Alternative Album, Breakthrough Artist- Single, Breakthrough Artist- Album, Single Of The Year (Feeding Line), Best Group, and the coveted Album Of The Year and Producer Of The Year.

Going up against Boy & Bear for three out of his seven nominations is West Australian MC, Drapht. Best Urban Album, Single Of The Year (Rapunzel), Breakthrough Artist-Single, Breakthrough Artist- Album, Most Popular Australian Artist, Best Male Artist and Engineer Of The Year (Dave Parkin).

Gotye’s, Making Mirrors, was released a little too late to make it into the ARIA album nominees, however Wally De Backer still managed to come out with seven nominations for the hit single, Somebody That I Used To Know feat. Kimbra. The single scooped up three awards at the ceremony today in the ARIA Artisan category for Best Video, Engineer Of The Year and Producer Of The Year. However, on the night Gotye will be up for Highest Selling Single (which so far, seems like a fait accompli), Single Of The Year, Best Pop Release and Best Male Artist.

Billy Thorpe has been posthumously acknowledged for his final album, Tangient with four nominations. This will be an appropriate opportunity to pay tribute to the life of an Australian rock legend, at the 25th anniversary of the awards.

The categories in which Thorpe is nominated in are Best Adult Contemporary Album, Best Cover Art, Engineer Of The Year and Producer Of The Year.

Two-time ARIA Award winner and 2011 Deadly Award winner, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu has scored six nominations for Rrakala in the categories of Best Independent Release, Best Male Artist, Album Of The Year, Best Cover Art (Carlos Santone) and won the Best World Music Album at the nominations event.

Eight-time ARIA Award winners Eskimo Joe have received six nominations while the band to steal 2010’s ARIA Awards, Birds Of Tokyo are back with five nominations.

There are some newcomers to the scene with The Jezabels receiving three nods for their highly anticipated album, Prisoner. The Byron Bay natives will be honoured in the categories of Breakthrough Artist- Single, Best Independent Release and Single Of The Year.

Multiple ARIA Award winner Guy Sebastian will be recognised, as well as Keith Urban and Hall Of Fame inductee, Nick Cave.

This will be the year of the comeback with the Highest Selling Single and Highest Selling Album categories returning after a one-year absence. Also planned for the event will be the return of the fan voting system and the ARIA Hall Of Fame segment presented by special guests that are yet to be announced.
