Adele is still going. Lloyd and LMFAO are still making waves as well. There has even been a shakeup in the market share of the TMN Hot 100. However, the real story for this week is Foster The People…
Even with a track on top of the chart, Lloyd’s Dedication To My Ex (Miss That) featuring Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne, Universal have lost their footing in terms of market share. In November of last year, even with their Hot 100 market share slipping behind Sony, they still held strong in the Top 40. Now, with Warner in second place in both the 100 and Top 40, Universal are unleashing a massive number of tracks to kick off the new year.
How long will it take them to get back on top? As long as possible, if it has anything to do with Warner, who are enjoying the rise of a new track, Flo Rida’s Wild Ones featuring Sia at #34, and three fast movers inside the Top 40: The Black Keys’ Lonely Boy (which jumped from #19 to #12), Simple Plan’s Summer Paradise (up from #30 to #13) and Bruno Mars’ Count On Me (which crept back up to #22 from #31).
The only other entry to the Hot 100 this week was Jessie J’s Laserlight, featuring David Guetta. Right now she’s got three tracks in the Hot 100; Domino is at #25 and Price Tag - now with 44 weeks in the chart - is still hovering at #89.
One of the Fast Movers for this week on the TMN Hot 100 also scored some serious sales in Australia this week. Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks moved from #22 to #14, back towards its high position of #11. More on them below...
Foster The People's Pumped Up Kicks has spent 21 weeks inside the Top 50 already. Now, for the first time, it has hit the top spot. We've said it before, but this single has been remarkable to watch, from its super-eager plays here in Australia from Triple J years ago (well, over a year ago), through to the album's release in Australia in May of 2011. Now the song tops the ARIA Singles chart for the first time in 2012, with triple-Platinum certification. Their third trip to Australia, this time for Big Day Out and some sold out sideshows, has really pushed their profile to the top.
Just below, Flo Rida managed to cover more ground than Foster The People (Pumped Up Kicks only moved up from #2 to #1 this week), but ended up second best. Wild Ones, featuring Sia flew up the chart from #24 to #2 in its third week. The track doesn't appear to have gained any certification yet, which suggests to us that it might have a fair way to go in terms of sales (remember, he's already had two #1 ARIA Singles with Low and Right Round). Will this be his third #1 in this country?
Australian upstart Timomatic (who featured in our 12 to watch in 2012) landed at #4 this week with Set It Off, behind Paradise, which stuck at #3 this week for Coldplay. Set It Off jumped from #12 into the Top 5, stealing Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg's spot at #4, pushing them down to #5 with Young, Wild and Free, featuring Bruno Mars.
Sitting only one week shy of 6 months worth of non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the ARIA Albums chart, Adele's 21 has equalled the number of weeks spent at #1 that Johnny Farnham's Whispering Jack spend in 1986 and 1987. That's a lot. That's also about as exciting as it gets, with the next three albums on the chart also staying put (LMFAO's Sorry For Party Rocking, Reece Mastin's self-titled debut and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto all sitting #2, #3 and #4 respectively).
Foster The People's Torches has darted up fro #12 to #5, a crazy 34 weeks after entering the chart and is now (according to a Sony press release this morning) certified Platinum. This is getting out of hand!
Australian rapper, 360, moved back towards his highest position with Falling And Flying (#4 on debut) climbing up from #22 to #11, while below, dustup heavyweight, Skrillex moved up from #44 to #14 with his Bangarang EP (It should be mentioned also that the single of the same title entered the ARIA Singles chart at #44 this week).
