In what the FBI says is “amongst the largest criminal copyright cases ever”, one of the world’s largest file sharing sites Megaupload has been shut down.

Seven people, including the Founder and several company executives, are being charged with violating piracy laws by federal prosecutors.

According to the New York Times, four of the seven people, including the site’s founder Kim Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, have been arrested in New Zealand and the three others remain at large. The seven — who a grand jury indictment called part of a “Mega Conspiracy” — have been charged with five counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy. The indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content.

This news comes only a day after online protests against a pair of antipiracy bills were considered by Congress. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill, and the Protect I.P. Act, or PIPA, in the US Senate.

Two days ago on January 18 it was announced that hip hop producer/mogul Swizz Beatz was the CEO of the Hong Kong based company, who was also the mastermind behind the bizarre video (see below) which enlisted Will.iam, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, and other various high profile celebrities to sing the praises of Megaupload as the filesharing site of choice since, as Kanye says, “It's the fastest and safest way to send files -- period."
