Chart wrap-up: New ARIA and Hot 100 #1s

23 January 2012

by Thomas Gilmore

Both the TMN Hot 100 Airplay Chart and the ARIA Singles chart saw new singles hit the top spot.

TMN HOT 100 AIRPLAY CHART

The TMN Hot 100 has a new #1. Coldplay’s Paradise, the second single from their ARIA #1, fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto has taken the top spot from Lloyd’s Dedication To My Ex (Miss That), featuring Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne, which stuck it out at #1 for two weeks at the start of this year. Taking the position that Coldplay left vacant is Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg’s Young, Wild & Free, which darted from #8 to #2, now with eight weeks on the chart.

The highest Australian single on the chart is Timomatic’s Set It Off, which moved from outside the Top 10 to #4. This is a triumphant start to Timomatic’s recording career. Tim is contributing to Sony’s hold of market share in both the Hot 100 and Top 40.

Warner is creeping closer. Last week it was three fast movers in the Top 40, this week WMA has scored another two, with Flo Rida’s Wild Ones, featuring Sia jumping from #34 to #8 and Laurent Wery’s Hey Hey Hey (Pop Another Bottle) flying from #48 to #31. Train’s Drive By entered a little lower, at #46. This is their highest debut on the TMN Hot 100 ever, with If It’s Love (entering at #54) the second highest debut.

ARIA TOP 50 SINGLES CHART

It isn't just the TMN Hot 100 that has a new #1, the ARIA Singles chart has also gained itself a new #1. Flo Rida's Wild Ones, which is now inside the Top 10 most heard tracks on radio, was the most purchased track in the country this week, earning Gold Certification along the way. Interestingly, Foster The People, the champions of last week, fell from #1 to #7 with Pumped Up Kicks.

Timomatic's Set If Off is on the same warpath in sales that it is taking in airplay. On the ARIA Singles chart the track moved from #4 to #2, still cruising along with Platinum Certification. Set It Off is one position above David Guetta's Turn Me On featuring Nicki Minaj (which moved from #14 to #3, marked a bullet performer) and the most heard song in the country, Coldplay's Paradise, which is now three-times Platinum.

Young, Wild & Free stuck it out at #5 for Wiz and Snoop, while Summer Paradise screamed up from #11 to #6, earning a mark as a bullet performer. Other bullets include Laurent Wery's Hey Hey Hey (Pop Another Bottle) which moved from #23 to #10, Drake's Take Care (#28 to #18) and The Black Key's Lonely Boy (#32 to #25).

ARIA TOP 50 ALBUMS CHART

Foster The People fell on the ARIA Singles chart, but continued their climb over in album land with Torches slithering up from #5 to #3, closing out their movement under the firmly-in-place Adele and LMFAO albums 21 and Sorry For Party Rocking at #1 and #2.

One Direction's Up All Night moved up from #8 to #4, the group's highest position in this country, solidifying their fifth week in the Top 10. Not too far below, The Black Keys sit it out at #7 with El Camino. The album's peak position is #7, it was at #7 last week and it has now spent seven weeks on the chart. Weird. (Interestingly, this exact sequence of numbers has occurred at least five times on the TMN Hot 100 in its history).
