Aussie acts dominate UK charts

Aussie names are currently popping up on the right end of the UK charts. Sia is at #1 with her collaboration with David Guetta on Titanium, and #5 with Wild Ones with Flo Rida. Gotye (and Kimbra) are at #3 with Somebody That I Used to Know. But overall Australia’s impact on the UK charts are low, according to figures released this week by the British Phonographic Industry based on Official Charts Company data.

Last year, Australian records made up 0.7% of the British album sales, down from 1.9% the year before. Australia ranks #8 for albums, following records from Britain (52.7%), the US (32.7%), Canada (4.5%), Barbados (2,3%), Ireland (2.2%), Holland (1.1%) and France (0.9%).

We beat Sweden, Italy, Germany, Jamaica, Spain and New Zealand, which ranged 0.5% to 0.2% On the single side, Australia ranked #10, with 0.5% of the market. This is an all-time low in five years, after a high of 2.9% in 2008, 2.4% in 2008 and 2.5% in 2009.

Contributing most to the UK singles charts last year were the US (43.8%) and the UK (42.6%), followed by the Barbados (3.8%), France (2.4%), Canada (1.5%), Sweden (1%), Romania (0.9%), Spain (0.8%), Ireland (0.7%), and Holland (0.6%). Australia beat Jamaica, Italy and Colombia.
