Status Quo rework 'Down Down' for Coles ad

11 July 2012

by Nathan Jolly

Coles and Status Quo have teamed up in what will undoubtedly go down in history as the low point in the intersection of music and marketing.

The three-minute commercial, which can be watched below, features the British band cleverly reworking the lyrics of their 1975 hit Down Down to reflect their new found obsession with grocery savings. Not only this, but the band play guitars in the shape of the Coles big red hand, while the drummer and keyboard player wear big red foam hands.

The highlight of the commercial (which will be cut down for free-to-air television) is the following Dylan-esque blast: "Down, Down, prices are down/When you need a helping hand/ Count on the savings of that Coles big red hand." (note the rhyming of 'hand' with 'hand').

Check out the commercial below, and treat it as the cautionary tale it most certainly is.
