Sydney's Annandale Hotel goes into receivership

11 February 2013

by Nathan Jolly

It's a sad day for the Sydney music scene, with the news that the Annandale Hotel has reportedly gone into receivership, with the venue expected to change hands this afternoon.

While music lovers reeled when the Annandale Hotel first went on the market in March 2011, hopes were bolstered last February when owner Matt Rule took down the 'For Sale' sign, as a reflection of the support the community had shown with the Buy A Brick campaign. Unfortunately, this does not seem to have been enough to save the venue.

At the time, Rule told TMN: "We’re a long way off where we need to be, but so far the public have been great in getting right behind the buy a brick concept; we now just need to get the music industry to do the same."

Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne hasn't held back, claiming that this is a wake-up call to governments at all levels.

“If these reports prove to be true I for one will be doing everything I can to make sure that the Annandale remains a live music venue, including working urgently with the receivers,” he said.

“So many Australian artists have had their start playing at the Annandale; its loss would be a body blow to young performers across Sydney. It is crucial that the Annandale remains a live music venue, we want rock-and-roll not residential development.

“In the coming weeks I will be seeking to reform Council planning to encourage live music. Local Government must promote, not prosecute, live music venues. This is real action – working with licensees, agents and promoters to establish a united front to bring productive change to Council policies so we can be more supportive of live music.”

The Rule brothers are expected to release a statement to media this afternoon. We'll let you know when they do.
