21 July 2011
Grinderman have been announced to headline two quite different live music events in December this year. Both the newly-revamped Homebake Festival and the independent Meredith Music Festival will feature Nick Cave’s feral garage-rock four-piece at the top of the bill.
Homebake organiser Joe Segreto promised a “classic edition” for the comeback of the Sydney festival, and he has certainly delivered. Grinderman will headline Homebake’s return along with The Triffids, The Church and Icehouse who will perform their 1980 pop-rock debut, Flowers.
These acts along with embryonic up-and-comers Papa Vs Pretty, The Jezabels and New Zealand’s Unknown Mortal Orchestra cements Segreto’s wish to weave storied artists in with contemporary young acts.
Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition winner Kimbra is set to perform, and with Gotye also included on the bill, a cameo of the Melbourne songstress for Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know single seems likely.
The festival took a year off in 2010 after a slow 2009 edition, although Segreto claimed the reason for the hiatus was because the artists he wanted weren’t available to perform.
Homebake Classic Edition takes place on Saturday December 3 at The Domain, Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney City.
Meanwhile, Grinderman is the only band announced so far for the twenty-first year of Meredith; the rest of the line-up will be announced in late August. This year’s festival will take place on the 9th, 10th and 11th of December, at its customary home of the Meredith Music Amphitheatre in country Victoria.
