Tame Impala win Triple J’s Album of the Year award

29 November 2010

Psychedelic rockers Tame Impala have taken out Triple J's J Award for Australian Album of the Year for their debut album, Innerspeaker.

The Perth-based, Modular-signed four-piece were awarded the national youth broadcaster's highest accolade at Melbourne's Ding Dong Lounge venue today, beating new releases from Sia, Angus & Julia Stone, Washington, Bliss N Eso, Birds of Tokyo and Cloud Control.

Triple J Music Director Richard Kingsmill said about Tame Impala: "Ever since hearing their first demos, we’ve been big fans of this band and their vision. This debut album is wonderfully crafted – it has plenty of layers but as a whole it paints a really strong picture. The album has a nod to the past, but it is also bursting with fresh ideas. Tame Impala have a strong spirit of creative adventure which we expect them to maintain over their music-making years to come."

Sydney folk band Boy & Bear won their award for Unearthed Artist of 2010 for their debut EP.

Meanwhile, Mairi Cameron and Stephen Lance took home the J Award for Australian Film Clip for Washington's Sunday Best video.
