Triple J listeners have voted Canadian band Arcade Fire's third album The Suburbs as the best of the year.
They overcame recent J Award winners Tame Impala's Innerspeaker in second and Sydney folk duo Angus & Julia Stone's Down The Way, which claimed third. Triple J favourites Cloud Control and Washington scored fifth and seventh place respectively.
Over 24,000 Triple J listeners took part in the national youth broadcaster's annual poll, conducted by Music Director Richard Kingsmill, who was very happy with the results.
“The overall reaction to the poll was really positive," he told TMN. "The excitement on twitter and text was great as we counted them down. People I think were really pleased the likes of The National, Yeasayer and LCD Soundsystem made it in the Top 10."
With nine Australian acts and 11 international acts making the top 20, Triple J listeners have favoured overseas music, but not by much.
“There were some notable Australian entries too which made people realise how strong our local scene is," added Kingsmill. "The general vibe from our audience was what a great year of music it's been. And I'm not going to disagree with that at all,” he said.
