[V] Rewind to 2008 with Billy Russell
In the video for his monster track, Fuck You, Cee Lo Green hangs out in a diner, spurting a tirade of abuse at his gold-digging ex-lover and her new beau. It’s a break-up song, sure, but it’s executed in such a sweet, playful way that its undertones of heartbreak could almost be overlooked. There’s no risk of that happening in the video for Cee Lo’s Gnarls Barkley effort Who’s Gonna Save My Soul. Again set in a diner (manufacture your own joke here about Cee-Lo’s size/love of food), the clip is an absolute lesson in what it’s really like to have your heart ripped out of your chest... quite literally, in fact. After being dumped by his lady friend, an uncharacteristically serious Jorma Taccone (he of SNL and The Lonely Island fame) uses a butter knife to extract his bloody heart and serve it up to the woman on a plate (“It’s actually yours now”. Ouch!). Of course, things get a little bit more light-hearted – no pun intended - as the anthropomorphic organ sprouts legs and uses a piece of broccoli as a microphone to mime the remainder of the song , all while strutting over the diner’s counter (that’s gotta be a health code violation). But even so, this video is an honest reflection of relationships and the psychological shrapnel they often leave behind.
