Max Rewind to 1998 with Chit Chat
This whole package makes me realise how far away from the real deal I am or will ever be. First of all, what a track. Music by the genius that is DJ Shadow and lyrics and vocals by the untouchable thom yorke about being so transfixed and immobilised by another human being you consider yourself just a rabbit in their headlights. It’s kind of odd that such an emotive track plays second fiddle to Jonathon Glazer’s brutally effecting clip. It works on so many levels and pushes the thresholds of what art is. It confronts how confronted we get by the mentally ill and try and sweep them under the carpet. It poses the question that if a genuine Messiah appeared on earth would we recognise him. It also sadly appeals to the Funniest Home Video gene. Whether it’s a guy getting hit in the nuts or in this case multiple car accidents, something in our DNA keeps us transfixed. French actor Denis Lavant is terrifyingly convincing as the lead in this clip and I doubt it could’ve worked without him. I never need to see this clip again. I don’t like how it makes me feel as a human being. But I do know that I’ll never forget it.
