Marina And The Diamonds: Shampain

[V] Ripe Clip of the week with Billy Russell

Poor Marina Diamandis just can’t spell. First she writes her surname as ‘and the Diamonds’ on her album cover, and now she releases a song called Shampain. Champagne I know (only too well). I even know what a Shampon is (if you don’t, it’s probably best to keep it that way). But Shampain? Not ringing any bells. Of course, when we read that the song is about the ‘depressing side of getting drunk’ (thanks Wikipedia!), things start to make sense (ShamPAIN! Pain! Get it?! Yeah... I still don’t understand the ‘sham’ part, either). And things becomes even clearer when we see the video, which follows our pissed protagonist as she cries and does her best to reenact the moves from Thriller (all while miming along to what could be a lost ABBA B-side). Despite its cliched Year 9 writers’ workshop ending – ‘and it was all just a dream!’ – the whole affair is pretty cool, employing some gothic elements (full moon, candles being blown out, a scorned woman zombie shuffle) to great effect. And as the most popular song on the [V]music Facebook page, it just so happens to be Channel [V]’s RIPE Clip this week.
