Blink 182: Josie

[V] rewind to 1998 with Danny Clayton

This was a simpler time for Blink 182 when their songs were written with little more than three guitar chords and their lyrical content revolved primarily around their penises. Sure, as the band went on they matured not only in their sound but in their lyrical content, but true Blink fans would have been just as happy to listen to more three-chord songs and jokes about penises. This song, written by Mark Hoppus, was about his ideal girlfriend. The name Josie comes from his friend’s dog. The band actually filmed two videos for the track. The first version featured the boys playing the song in a basement as it filled up with water, but the band didn’t like the result so this alternative was later shot, and has Mark chasing a love interest at high-school, played by actress Alyssa Milano. In one of the scenes, Mark runs through a cafeteria while a room full of students throw food at him. During filming, one of the actors was a bit overzealous and threw a hand full of mashed potato in Mark’s face (you’ll know which one when you see him). When the camera cut, Mark was forced to squeeze mashed potato out from behind his eyeball. Mmm.
