23 August 2010
For this week's special Country Issue, we profile four of Australian's shining new stars - Jasmine Rae, Peter McWhirter, McAlister Kemp and Shea Fisher.
Jasmine Rae
From: Melbourne
Key Track: Look It Up
The first most would have heard of Jasmine Rae was when she was nominated for an ARIA award last year, for her brilliant debut album Look It Up.
Rae has gone from strength to strength, becoming the first locally based country artist to obtain over 1 million plays on Myspace. In 2008 she was invited to perform at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville; the following year Brooks and Dunn invited her to support their national arena tour. Rae is set to debut her second album early next year.

Peter McWhirter
From: Camden
Key Track: I Will Stand By You
McWhirter didn’t have to wait long for success; he had barely come of age when his debut single Humm raced to the top of the country music video charts. Now he has backed up this achievement with a remarkable debut album, Lucky As A Seven which showcases his great songwriting skills and belies his young age. The album flirts with folk, indie pop and blues, indicating that McWhirter may cross over into the commercial pop radio world, if given support.

McAlister Kemp
From: Kempsey/Moree
Key Track: It Don’t Buy You Love
McAlister Kemp is the union of two successful country artists - Drew McAlister and Troy Kemp. The fruits of their collaboration, All Kinds Of Tough crosses the two artists’ senses of humour with bittersweet tales that are quintessentially Australian. All Kinds Of Tough has been the highest selling debut country album so far this year, debuting at #8 on the ARIA Country Sales charts in January. The next steps this duo take in the musical world will be interesting to watch.

Fisher is absolutely smashing it in the US at the moment. Her debut US single Don’t Chase Me has been given strong support by US Cable channels CMT and GAC, which will bode well for her next American release in 2011.In Australia, Fisher has had four #1 singles on the Country Music Channel, with Suitcase crossing over to Video Hits. This show was the perfect Australian introduction to Nicki Minaj, focused primarily on her more recent record, while shying away from early vitriolic material.

Returning almost a year after selling out this same venue, twice, and watching his third album debut at #2 on the ARIA chart, City and Colour were again met with yelping female fuss and dopplegangers aplenty, but it was his showcase last night that set him apart from 2011’s gig.

A small town festival once reserved for touring Australian rock bands has since proven it can compete with the nation’s music event heavyweights.

Although seven years have elapsed since Garbage last released an album, it appears that musically, not too much has changed.

While it doesn’t hang together quite as perfectly as Teen Dream, Bloom is just as magic and possibly even more interesting.

The blindingly bright synth notes that ring in Spiritus suggest that things are going to be markedly different the second time around.

Darnielle is an interesting man to watch on stage. Somehow the combination of his geeky awkwardness, his comfortable manor on stage and the audience's obvious love for his prolific catalogue earned him your full attention as you watched. His barebones songwriting was set alight by the tight and dynamic trio.

This is a fun listen, if not a classic, and possibly bodes well for a proper return to form.

It’s impossible to divorce Spiritualized’s seventh record from the circumstances in which it was made. Frontman Jason Pierce was suffering from a degenerative liver disease and began a course of experimental medication, which played havoc with his wellbeing and mental state.

“I’d forgotten who I was without music,” Higgins explained to the assembled press, and music itself, predominately songwriting, seems to be a key lyrical theme on the new record

If the audience had been a coach on The Voice that night, and Seal was but a hopeful contestant trying to impress the judges with his musical abilities, their hands would definitely have been numb from pummeling that big red button and screaming ‘I want you!’
19 April 2012
It’s not just its weaving of The Getaway Plan’s braised delivery, nor the lyrical aptitude of Chiodos and Emarosa, it’s the heavier concentration on samples, keys, and galloping drums that prove the band are completely unafraid to denounce their kindred predecessors.
