DVD Review: The Informant

05 April 2010

by Nathan Jolly

Steven Soderbergh gives good film. Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Erin Brockovich, Traffic and Ocean’s Eleven are proof enough that he does more than sit around on a director’s chair, and The Informant should further his standing as one of Hollywood’s most respected and successful directors.

Based on journalist Kurt Eichenwald’s non-fiction book of the same name, published in 2000, it details whistle-blower Mark Whitacre (expertly played by Matt Damon, who evidently works well with Soderbergh at the helm) and his involvement in the Lysine (a livestock additive) price-fixing conspiracy.

Admittingly, this premise doesn’t really incite excitement in the average person, and at first it does very little to hold the viewer’s interest. However, Whitacre’s struggle with bipolar disorder is what really drives this brilliant film.
