Triple J Unearthed Pick: Nakagin – Bloom

Nakagin
Bloom

Is it too broad to say that we’re in the producer age? With the likes of Ta-ku, Chet Faker, Wave Racer, Elizabeth Rose and, of course, the biggest of the big, Flume making such seismic waves at home and abroad then I think it’s time we made it official. The talent that’s cropping up around the country right now is fantastic and, for me, just bloody exciting. There are all manner of emerging beatmakers uploading their gear to Unearthed at the moment and the latest stuff from Sydney producer Nakagin is sounding incredible.

Whereas some of his contemporaries direct their tunes towards clubs, Nakagin’s material takes a more muted approach, the Sydney youngster seemingly more interested in the ambience found between sparse drum pads and whispering electronics, not to mention precisely detailed layering. Think along the lines of Bonobo, Baths, Thrupence and Electric Sea Spider for sound-alikes. Bloom from Nakagin – which appears on the Spring EP from always excellent Sydney imprint Feral Media – floats across the speakers with such a gentle disposition that you might miss its charms if you don’t listen close enough. Make sure you do.
