Barnett, Tame Impala up for BRIT Awards

2015’s most beloved Australian exports Tame Impala and Courtney Barnett are both up for a BRIT Award, one of the biggest accolades in the British music industry.

Barnett, who last year won four ARIA Awards and is nominated for a Grammy, is up for International Female Solo Artist. She’ll go head-to-head against Björk, Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainor and Lana Del Rey on February 24 at London’s O2 Arena.

Tame Impala had a banner year in 2015 taking out four WAM Awards, five ARIAs and one Grammy nomination. The Perth band are up for International Group against some of the globe’s heavy-hitters: U2, Eagles of Death Metal, Major Lazer and Alabama Shakes.

Barnettis up for Best New Artist alongside James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly, and Meghan Trainor.Tame Impala’s ARIA #1 LP Currents is up for Best Alternative Album against releases from Alabama Shakes, Björk, My Morning Jacket and Wilco. Meanwhile,Hiatus Kaiyote is up forBest R&B Performance andKeith Urban is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance. Winners are announced February 15at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.

Leading the BRIT Award nominations this year are Adele, James Bay and Years & Years, each with four nods.

James Bay and Adele are also locked in to perform on the night, alongside Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Jess Glynne, The Weeknd and Little Mix.

Jesse Glynne, whose track I Cry When I Laugh was the biggest-selling 2015 debut record in the UK last year, is up for three awards. Calvin Harris is also up for three, including British Male Solo Artist and Coldplay is nominated for two (British Group and British Album of the Year for ARIA #2 debut A Head Full of Dreams).

Naturally, the biggest major label dominates the nominations this year; Universal Music are up for 27 awards, Sony Music are up for 11 and Warner Music are up for nine. The independent labels are collectively up for 14 awards, with artists including Courtney Barnett (who is signed to House Anxiety in the UK), Aphex Twin (Warp), Father John Misty, (Bella Union/PIAS) and Björk (One Little Indian) all receiving nominations.
